    February Birthdays

    The February Birthday Report
Along with Ground Hog Day on Feb. 2nd, Valentines Day being February 14th , and Presidents Day the 20th, we want to wish a  Very Happy Birthday to:

    Augie Schlickau
Augie celebrates his big day on Feb.3rd! He is a Special Olympic bowler that really sends the pins flying on Wednesdays with the Pin Gobblers!

    David Weiss
Along with bowling on Wednesdays, another favorite thing for David - is celebrating his birthday! Feb. 9th is his favorite day of the year!

    Louis Muchow
He's our man for all seasons! Louie participates in Basketball skills, Track and Field, Bocce and Bowling. Although he's a very busy guy, Louie makes time to celebrate his birthday on Feb. 21st!

    Jim Seamonson
We're not sure what Jim enjoys more... Special Olympics or celebrating birthdays! He has participated in Basketball Skills, Track and Field, Bocce and Bowling. He will be blowing out his candles Feb. 25th!

With our group being so large, it may be possible that we have not recognized all the February birthdays. If you know of anyone who should be included in out list, please contact us at  saukcountyspecialolympics@msn.com.  It wouldn't be any fun if we didn't include everyone!!!

    The Ringer

On Monday, January 2nd, the Sauk County Special Olympians, Coaches and caregivers  went to a special viewing of "The Ringer" starring Johnny Knoxville. We were the only ones in the theatre as Desert Star Cinema in Lake Delton arranged for a special viewing (and a discount on admission) just for our group!
     Our Review of the Movie...

     It's very funny.

REALITY CHECK - Athletes don't arrive at competitions in black limos - no matter how good they are!

REALITY CHECK - With all the paperwork, time trials, and physicals that have to be done (and turned in in advance)... it isn't very likely that a "Ringer" could get in to any Special Olympic event.

We liked seeing other Special Olympians as extras in the movie!
Special thanks to to the Desert Star Cinema   for having a special showing just for our group. We had a great time. Your theatre is very beautiful and your staff is the greatest! Thank you again!!!

    Castle Rock Harley Ladies Donation

The Castle Rock Harley Ladies donated $300 to the Sauk County Special Olympics. The donations were contributed through various fund-raiseres that the Harley Ladies did throughout the year. Donations help Special Olympians in being able to participate in the may sports offered to them. Sauk County Special Olympics greatly appreciated the generosity of this group. Pictured are Special Olympians: Bill Soetenga, Brian Wehman and Maggie Harrington. Presenting the check was Paulette (Tootie) Greenwood from the Harley Ladies to Debra Carroll, agency manager.

    All New for 2006

Welcome to the new Sauk County Special Olympics Blog!

As you may have noticed, our name has changed slightly. We've transformed from the Sauk Co. ARC Special Olympics to Sauk County Special Olympics. It's not really too much different, but it is easier to say (a little quicker to type) and we still remain as Agency 6-52.

Our e-mail address has changed too. It is now  saukcountyspecialolympics@msn.com.  Please update your address books so we can keep you 'in-the-know' with updates. You can delete any links to the old BLOG since it will be discontinued as of Feb. 1st. You can view some of the 2005 entries by clicking on our Archives Link  for January.

We will be adding some new features to our BLOG. There will be monthly birthday reports, player profiles, schedules and other related Special Olympic activities. Our Coaches have some wonderful things in store for the team this year, so be watching for updates!

Thanks for visiting! Feel free to e-mail us or leave comments. We would love to hear from you!

With our group being so large, it may be possible that we have not recognized all the January birthdays. If you know of anyone who should be included in out list, please contact us at  saukcountyspecialolympics@msn.com.  It wouldn't be any fun if we didn't include everyone!!!

State Bocce Players go to Eau Claire

    All that Glitters is GOLD!

It was the Avengers and Exterminators time to shine at the State Bocce Tournament in Eau Claire, Aug. 5-6.  After the long drive on Friday, the team enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Olive Garden, followed by a swim in the pool (and a failed attempt by 4 of the athletes to get Coach Deb wet!) at the Palace Hotel. Saturday morning, compeition began at 9:30am. at the UW Eau Claire Campus.

It was a clean sweep for the Avengers who won all three of their games, with the highlight being a dramatic come-from-behind victory in the 2nd game.  Patty M., Vickie L., Gerry D., and Todd N. were very pleased with the well-deserved victories and of course, their gold medals!

The Exterminators lost their first game, but rallied to win the next two.  The team and coaches were not sure how the team would place untill the final results were announced.   Sandy F., Nikki C., Dennis H., and Louis M. were overjoyed to step up and receive their GOLD!

    *A Special Update*
Two of our Track & Field Athletes, Vickie L. (50 meter walk) and Toni W. (Shot Put) have been selected to attend an assessment camp in September for qualification to participate in the Special Olympics Nationals being held in Ames, IA July 2-9, 2006. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH !

Our Bocce teams are 'On-a-Roll !'
What a great way to spend a Saturday!

On Saturday, June 25th, Sauk County ARC took 4 teams to the beautiful McKenzie Center in Poynette to scrimmage with several other Area 6 teams. Each of our teams played 2-3 games to sharpen their skills and get ready for District Competition to be held in LaCrosse on July 16th.

The competition started around 9am. with each team playing  2 games. Our athletes had a break at noontime and enjoyed a lunch of Hot dogs, baked beans, potatoe salad, chips and bottles of water at the McKenzie Center. After lunch, it was one more game and then back home for a well-deserved rest.

Participating were Gerry D., Vickie L., Frank G., Pat D., Jim S., Nikki C., Louis M., Sandy F., Dennis H., Terri S., Brian W., Toni W., Todd N., Tina W., Maggie H., Coach Deb, Coach Marie and Coach Ramona.

Gaylord drove the pick up truck that carried Coaches Marie and Ramona, followed by the three new vans from VARC who carried athletes who were unable to walk the entire parade route.

Our marchers were: Todd N., Frank G., Vickie L., Nikki C., Toni W., Maggie H., Pat D., Gerry D., Louis M., Sandy F., Della M. and Coaches Deb, Marie & Ramona.

District Track & Field Competition '05

Those Wednesday practices at Pineview Track have really paid off!

Fifteen of our Athletes braved the cold, sometimes wet weather to attend the District Track & Field Competition held in Oregon, WI on Saturday, May 7th. They competed in running and walking events, softball throw and shot put.  Participating were: Terri S., Todd N., Sandy F., Nikki C., Patrick D., Vicky L., Louis M., Brian W., Toni W., Dennis H., Gerry D., Frank G., Vickie L., Maggie H., Cary R.

Despite the dreary weather, 12 of our 15 athletes managed to qualify (place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in an event) for State Competition! Because of SOWI quotas, we are allowed only 9 athletes for State Competition.

Congratulations to everyone! You did a GREAT JOB!!! State Competition will be held at the UW Stevens Point Campus on June 9-11. We wish our State qualifiers the very best of luck!
