Riviera Bowl in Sauk City, WI was the site for Sauk Prairie's 3rd Annual Bowling Event on Saturday, May 12th, 2007. Each year Sauk Prairie Athletes and Coaches do a fantastic job hosting this great event.

Athletes bowled 2 games each, and then were awarded a trophy, bowling towel and a certificate. Thank you gifts were presented to the people who worked so hard to organize the event. Our own Ramona Nachtigal was recognized for being the Area 6 Volunteer of the Year! (See the photos in the Album: Sauk Prairie Bowling Event)

After all presentations were done, the athletes were treated to a pizza lunch and social time. A big thank you to Sauk Prairie for the hospitality. You guys are the best!

On April 25th, Coach Marie, Ramona and Dawn hosted a Bowling Awards Banquet at Brewster's Lanes. After bowling their last games of the season, the athletes were treated to a dinner of Lasagna, salad and dessert followed by the presentation of Bowling Awards. A special presentation was made to Sauk County Special Olympics by the family of Bill Soetenga. Bill's family gave a donation to be used in his memory. Bill had passed away just 2 weeks prior. He will be missed by Coaches, athletes and friends. Thank you to the Soetenga family for their kindness.

The day began with opening Ceremonies. Agencys were introduced and proudly marched onto the track to be recognized. After the Star Spangled Banner was sung, and the Special Olympic Oath recited, the  Reedsburg Agency 6-09 athletes and Law Enforcement Officers ran the Olympic torch  around the track. Once the flame was lit, special honors were given to Ramona Nachtigal for being Volunteer of the Year! Another was given to Vickie Luxton who was named athlete of the year. It was such a nice honor to have two members from our Agency be recognized. They certainly deserve it! There will be more in our next Blog entry about their awards... so be watching for that! 

The events our Athletes participated in were: 50M run, 100M Run, Shotput, Softball Throw, 100M Walk, 800M Run, 4-man Relay Race and Long Jump. Athletes participating were: Sue Bentzler, Nikki Cook, Gerald Dobson, Patrick Drake, Dan Gardner, Ken Gillingham, Frank Gundlach, Maggie Harrington, Arnold Jesse, Merry Ann Johnson, Josh Kuhls, Vicky Lorenz, David Luther, Vickie Luxton , Terry Maldonado, Louis Muchow, Todd Nachtigal, Shawn Neises, Ed Pepin, Kate Potter, Kerry Schall, Teri Spraetz, Steve Stoltz, Toni Wagner, Josh Walsh, Brain Wehman, and  Berneice Wildes.

Many of our Athletes will be going to State on June 7-9 at the UW Stevens Point. We wish them good Luck!

This spring our Agency sold Patio Stones and Bird baths as our fundraiser. They arrived just in time for Mother's Day deliveries!

 

Sauk County Special Olympics donated a beautiful new birdbath to VARC (our sheltered workshop) as a thank you gift for all of the wonderful things they have done for us.

 

Thanks go out to Pauline Maccaux for her great idea! And a big thanks to all who sold, purchased, loaded and/or delivered these beautiful pieces!

Each team will be playing at least 2 games.  There will be ten courts available.

 

DATE:                                                June 23, 2007

LOCATION:                          Soccer Fields, N. Dewey Avenue, Reedsburg, WI

TIME:                                     Registration will start at 9:00 AM.  An opening ceremony will be at 9:45 AM.  Games will start at 10:00.  Lunch will be from 12:00-1:00 PM

REGISTRATION:                        Deadline is June 11, 2007

DIRECTIONS:                        From interstate:  Take Exit 92

From Highway 12:  Follow Highway 23/33 to Reedsburg.  Turn right on Highway H (there will be an Amoco on the right).  Follow Highway H to the flashing stop light (approximately 1 block) turning left on 8^th Street for 1 long block.  Turn right on N. Dewey and the soccer fields will be on the right-hand side.  There will be signs showing the soccer field.

DRESS:                                   Comfortable shoes and uniforms-you will be playing on a soccer field.

LUNCH:                                 There will be no fee.  Menu consists of barbeques, chips, desserts, and beverages. )

MISCELLANEOUS:            There will be a club house there for restroom facilities/electricity.   Please bring your own bocce sets (courts will be provided).  There will be tents for shade and cover.  Feel free to bring your own tents/chairs for seating.

On Saturday, April 14th, Desert Star Cinema  in Wisconsin Dells hosted a special private movie for Sauk Co. Special Olympians, families and friends. The movie was the Box Office hit, "Wild Hogs" starring John Travolta, Tim Allen, William H. Macy, and Martin Lawrence. Click this link for more movie info:  http://wildhogs.movies.go.com/ 

 

The theatre opened it's doors for us at 9 am. We were able to load up on popcorn and concessions and find a great seat! The movie began at 10 am. It was very funny and everyone had a great time.

 

After the movie, we went to Pizza Ranch in Reedsburg and enjoyed a wonderful buffet lunch together.

 

Thanks go out to Stephanie at Desert Star Theatre for arranging for our movie and for the reduced price for our tickets.

On Saturday, April 21st, Sauk County Special Olympians, Coaches, Volunteers and Caregivers attended a very special Health Talk. Nurse Practitioner, Jeanne Kast from the Reedsburg Clinic, and Certified EMT, Melissa Ladika offered a free presentation tailored to address some of the health concerns of our Athletes during competitions and also in their daily lives.

 

The discussion included everything from how and when to dial 911 on a cell phone, to basic knowlege of first aid proceedures. Each athlete was asked to fill our an emergency information sheet and was given a Refrigerator Magnet with "Who to call in an emergency" numbers on it.  After the talk, participants enjoyed a lunch and social time.

 

Coach Deb videotaped portions of the presentation and if you are interested in viewing it, please give her a call. We would like to thank Jeanne and Melissa who took time out of busy schedules to speak to us.  Also a big thank you to Carol Moe-Kiefer who allowed us to use her home for our meeting.

We have new uniforms and do we ever look cool!!! Because of our great fundraising efforts, we were able to raise enough money for our new tank tops and shorts. Athletes may wear white t-shirts underneath on cooler days. The old windsuits will be great over the top of them.

 

Our Basketball Team and Skills athletes were the first to try them out. Team Basketball and our regular uniforms are slightly different in color. They both are made from a light weight "dri-weave" material and will keep athletes cool and dry on those hot days.  Athletes will be using them for basketball, track and field and bocce. You may use your old uniforms for practice if you'd like.

 

You may purchase your uniform if you wish. The cost is $49.

On March 10th, 2007, Area 6 attended the individual Basketball skills competition at Waunakee High School, Waunakee, WI.  Our Athletes did well. They placed as follows: Louis M. (2nd place); Patrick D. (2nd place); Toni W. (2nd place); Teri S. (2nd place); Brian W. (6th place); Frank G. (2nd place); Susan B. (1st place); Geral D. (5th place); and Arnold J. (1st place). Athletes unable to attend were Nichole C. and Victoria L.

 

Our first ever attempt at Team Basketball went well. The Sauk Beavers (our Sauk Co. Athletes merged with the Reedsburg Agency 6-09) competed at UW Platteville on March 11th. They took first place in Division 6! Team membersare Chris K., Donielle F., Sid B., Zach D., Dylan S., Jamie W., Shawn N., Dan G., Jeremiah C., Ken D., and Josh K.  They were coached by Dan Gasser. Scores were as follows:

                   Sauk Beavers vs. LaCrosse Blue Jays  (we won 18-08)

                   Sauk Beavers vs. Platteville Fireballs    (we won 26-10)

The Sauk Beavers went on to State where they placed 4th in their division. Not too bad for a first attempt at team basketball!  Way to go team!!!
