Reedsburg Bocce Invitational 2008

Saturday, June 21, 2008                                                Pineview Elementary Soccer Fields

Great weather was a bonus for the appx. 200 Bocce players, Coaches, Volunteers, family members and friends that braved the road detours and $4+/gallon gas prices to attend our 2nd Bocce Invitational. Area 6 Agencys: Baraboo Special Olympics, Stoughton Special Olympics, LaCrosse Parks and Rec., and the ARC of Columbia County, joined our agency for the a day of fun and Bocce. It was great seeing all those friendly faces again!
The opening ceremonies began with our VFW Post 1916 Colorguard and national anthem, followed by a welcome from Regional Sports Director, Jon Janigo who acted as our Master of Ceremonies. Athletes Louie and Debbie of Columbia County recited the Special Olympic Oath and Jon made a special presentation to the Area 6 Male Athlete of the Year, Arnold Jesse (Sauk Co. 6-52). Click this link to see more about Arnold http://saukcountyspecialolympic.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!260F3D822453A082!968.entry .
Jon also recognized the 2008 Agency Manager of the Year, Helen Ziegler (Baraboo), who will receive her award at the Recognition Ceremony at Miller Park in Milwaukee, WI on June 28th. Then with loud cheering from the audience, Jon announced, "Let the games begin!"
After each team completed two games, we took a lunch break. Athletes had their choice of a Brat plate or Taco Salad plate, with chips, dessert and drink. After lunch, games resumed. Around 2:30pm., our visiting teams loaded into their vehicles and headed home.
Members of our team stayed to help with clean up.
We would like to thank all the Athletes, Coaches and Volunteers that attended! You helped make the day alot of fun! We hope you will keep us in mind for next year.
The athletes will be competing in District Competition in Onalaska, WI on July 12th.

A Note of Thanks

You've probably heard about how difficult it has been for the people in our area with the flooding and record rainfalls. Despite the hardship that the Reedsburg community has endured, we have received amazing support for our Athletes. In an average year, these people donate time, services, food, use of facilities for our Invitational - and that's going above and beyond!  This year, with all of our challenges, those same people, though coping with situations of their own, still managed to make our Invitational a success simply because... the athletes are worth it!!!
The following people need to be recognized for putting Athletes first and going above and beyond to make this event happen:

    • Matt Scott from the Reedsburg Parks and Rec. Department -  Despite having his hands more than full with running the Parks and Rec. Dept., he was also saddled with Flood Clean up, Setting up facilities for FEMA 's visit, and trying to reschedule all the events on his calendar. He still took time to set up our tent, move in the picnic tables and draw our court lines! Matt, we couldn't have done this without you!
    • Craig Stovey, Reedsburg Soccer Club and Reedsburg IGA -  Craig allowed us to use the Soccer Club concessions stand and bathrooms. Craig is also the manager of the Reedsburg IGA.  With flood clean-up of his own, Craig still donated 3 dozen sweet rolls to our breakfast concessions.
    • Jon Janigo, Regional Sports Director For Area 6 Special Olympics  -  He allowed us to borrow his PA System, stopwatches, bocce balls, and other equipment to get us through the day. He acted as our Master of Ceremonies. A big thanks, Jon,  for all you do for us!
    • Melissa Ladika, our EMT  -  With new baby daughter, Brieleigh along for the day, Melissa made sure the  athletes stayed safe and healthy throughout the competition.
    • Deb Hansen from the Wisconsin Dells Starbucks  -  Deb provided the Coffee, Iced Tea, creamers and sugars for the Breakfast Concessions Stand. Starbucks will also be  honored as the Area 6 Organization of Year 2008. Deb will be accepting her award at Miller Park in Milwaukee, WI on June 28th.  Congratulations, Deb and to the crew at Starbucks!
    • Joe Gussell from Holiday Wholesale, Wisconsin Dells
    • Shawn Parce from Viking Village Grocery
    • Art Nachtigal and Phillip Craker , Colorguards from VFW Post 1916.
    • Marie Willis and Ramona Nachtigal - our Registration Table
    • Pauline Maccaux, Pam Rego, Bill Gums and Dawn Grass - Our Amazing Concessions stand crew!
    • Linda Schyvinck
    • Elizabeth Mueller
    • To anyone who helped with anything - and we don't have all your names... but please know that we do appreciate you!
      • To all volunteers who acted as Court Officials and Assistants.
      • To anyone who paid $4+/gal. and drove miles through detours to transport an athlete to the competition.
      • To the coaches, parents, caregivers, family members, and volunteers that gave support to the athletes. Thank you for all you do!

Agency 6-52 Gives Back

June 8, 2008                                                       Harley Davidson Facility, Mauston, WI
Every year the Castle Rock Harley Ladies donate funds to our agency. Those funds enable our athletes to compete in Regional and State Competitions and are greatly appreciated!
This year, thanks to a great suggestion by Tootie Greenwood, our agency had an opportunity to give back. Tootie works with many of our Athletes at VARC in Reedsburg. She mentioned that the Harley Davidson Riders were having a 105th Anniversary Celebration and needed some flyers and booklets packed into plastic bags to be given to people attending the event.
On Sunday, June 8th, seven athletes visited the Mauston facility and were treated to a pizza lunch as they helped the Castle Rock Harley Club pack bags for the event. Athletes attending were Toni Wagner, Pat Drake, Josh Kuhls, Merry Ann Johnson, Ted Stricker, Frank Gundlach and Nikki Cook.
The athletes enjoyed their time helping and were very impressed with the motorcycles that were being built in the shop.
Thanks go to Tootie Greenwood for providing us with this wonderful opportunity to give back.

Team Basketball Does Well in Area Competition

On March 16th, our merged basketball team, The Sauk Beavers (the Reedsburg High School Athletes, Agency 6-09 and our Sauk County SO, Agency 6-52) went to Area Team Basketball Competition in Platteville, WI. We are happy to say that the team won both of their games and will be going to State Competition for the second year in a row.

Coach Dan Gasser reports, "The basketball team really came together at the area competition.  We had struggled in our earlier scrimmages, but they really did well on Sunday, and now they're headed back to State.  They played the LaCrosse All-Stars in the first game and won a close contest, 14-12.  In the championship game they played the West Madison Green Hornets and won 30-12."

February 13

Coach's February Newsletter

Greetings and great news!

We made about $3,000 on our Raffle in December and that will help offset our expenses for the upcoming sports seasons. I'd like to have a meeting after bowling on March 12th at Brewster's Lanes to discuss the upcoming sports, our spring fundraiser, and our Bocce invitational in June.

As many of you know, we are not doing basketball skills this year, but we still have Team Basketball and will be supporting them throughout the season. In place of basketball skills, we're going to be going to Snap Fitness and use some of their exercise equipment. We will be using some circuit training equipment, along with treadmills and elliptical. The cost will be $3.00 per session per person. If you are interested in doing this, let us know as soon as you can because we are limited to 15 athletes per day; also, please let us know if there are any physical limitations or things that we should be aware of. If you are a family member, caregiver , or parent, you are invited to attend our sessions as well. Nancie Cook (524-2879), Deb Carroll (983-2719) and Marie Willis (986-6702) have been trained on the equipment. We will be having sessions on Thursday and Friday afternoons from 3-4pm. VARC will provide transportation to Snap Fitness.

I'm sitting here while the snow is coming down, schools closing, thinking about getting ready for (athletics) Track & Field, and Bocce this year. Bowling is still going on but is winding down. I'm anticipating track to be starting in April (probably April 11th). I just finished training in our new sport, Turbo Javelin. It is a new sport and we are looking forward to having it in our track and field events this year.

Bocce season will start right after track and field in June; however, I need to know who is going to compete in bocce this year and need to know this by March 15th. I need to submit the forms to the Area Office so they can start to generate team rosters and prepare for our own invitational.

Enclosed are the 2008 Awards and Recognition applications. Please submit applications for those that you feel are deserving of this recognition. These people/businesses volunteer their time, effort and money and do not expect anything in return. This is one way in which to express our appreciation of them for their dedication and hard work. If you need more than one form, I'll gladly copy and send them to you. These applications are to be postmarked by April 1, 2008.

Here's hoping we'll have an early spring.

Deb Carroll, Agency Manager/Coach
